Meet Our CEO

Chances are you have heard of Charles Terrell before.  His contributions to the Dallas business community, city government and the state of Texas Criminal Justice System are as well known as his impressive career as Chairman of the Board of Unimark Insurance.

Terrell has a long history of involvement in criminal justice. Mr. Terrell served as Chairman of the Texas Department of Corrections and the first Chairman of the combined Texas Criminal Justice Department, which includes the state prison system, pardons and paroles, and adult probation.  This system, under Mr. Terrell's leadership, made great strides in literacy, prison construction, job training, and drug rehabilitation.  In addition, as Chairman of the Criminal Justice Task Force for Governor Bill Clements, Mr. Terrell's leadership helped bring about twenty-one successful anti-crime legislation mandates.  In honor of these and other contributions, a 2,250 bed prison in Livingston, Texas was named the Charles T. Terrrell Unit.

Politically, Mr. Terrell has been a significant player in the progress of the city of Dallas.  At 35, he was the youngest member of the Dallas City Council. He served as Chairman of two successful Dallas Mayoral Campaigns for Annette Strauss, as well as Co-Chairman for Ron Kirk Mayoral Campaign. He also chaired the Tom Landry Day Parade and the 1994 Super Bowl parade.

With all these contributions, it may come as some surprise to learn about Mr. Terrell's remarkable personal journey.  He survived polio, lymphoma,
severe food allergy attacks that brought him near death, and a rare neurological syndrome, Guillain-Barre that left him paralyzed, on a respirator, unable to talk.  Yet, with the same kind of dedication and persistence that has marked his public life, Mr. Terrell underwent intensive and painful rehabilitation and has returned to normal and active life.

Mr. Terrell stays active in many political, non-profit, and business leadership capacities, including a very hands-on approach as Chairman of the Board of Unimark Insurance.  He graduated from Southern Methodist University with honors and was an Academic All American football player for the SMU Mustangs.
